Rename photos by date taken
Give a pile of IMG_1234.JPG files names that sort by when they were taken. Dates come from each photo’s EXIF data, with a fallback for files that don’t have it.

Photos are read and cleaned on your device. They are never uploaded — open the Privacy check at the bottom to watch.
How it works
For each JPEG, PNG or WebP photo the tool reads the DateTimeOriginal field — when the shutter was pressed, in the camera’s local time. Files without it (screenshots, some edited images, videos) use the date the file was last modified, or keep their name. If two photos were taken in the same second, a number is added: …_1.jpg, …_2.jpg.
Your browser can’t rename files on your disk, so you get a ZIP of renamed copies plus a CSV listing old and new names. File contents aren’t changed at all.

Frequently asked questions
Which time zone is used?
The camera’s own clock, which is what EXIF records. Phones set it automatically; standalone cameras may be off if you travelled.
Does renaming change the photo?
No. The file contents are copied exactly; only the name in the ZIP changes.
Can I rename videos?
Yes, using their modified date, since this tool doesn’t read video metadata.
